The MRCOOL 5th Gen DIY 24K BTU Single Zone Mini-Split is built for large open spaces — a big great room, a whole-floor addition, or a shop or garage you're heating and cooling as one zone — covering 1,000 to 1,300 square feet.
Most mini-splits this size require a licensed HVAC contractor to run new refrigerant lines and pull a vacuum on the system before it's legally allowed to run — a step that usually means scheduling a visit, paying for labor, and waiting on availability. This system skips that step entirely. The line set arrives pre-charged with refrigerant from the factory, so there's nothing to vacuum and no license required to connect it. That typically saves homeowners a few thousand dollars in labor costs alone, on top of not having to work around someone else's schedule. It's the only ductless system on the market built this way — MRCOOL holds a U.S. patent specifically for this pre-charged installation method (Patent No. 11,125,479), so this isn't just a looser take on "DIY-friendly."
Like the 18K, it runs on 230V power rather than the standard 115V outlet. Most homes already have a 230V circuit somewhere (the kind that runs a dryer or electric range), so it's usually a matter of confirming one is available near the install site.
The pre-charged fittings are Intertek-tested and certified, which is part of why this setup meets the same safety standards a contractor-installed system would, without the contractor. Controls are the same across the line — remote, the MRCOOL app, or Alexa and Google Assistant — with the "Follow Me" sensor adjusting to wherever you're actually sitting rather than just the wall-mounted unit. It's rated to keep heating down to about 5°F outside and stays quiet at this size too, running around 58 decibels outdoors.
Registering the unit gets you 5 years of parts coverage and 7 years on the compressor.
